The Porsche 959 is a rare and awesome
automobile. Less than 400 were built in 1987 - 1988. They sold for about $250,000 US
each.
Space age technology was used in building its body, made up of aluminum
and Kevlar parts to keep it light, but strong enough to handle the 450 hp that where
transmitted through its four wheel drive configuration. It would rocket from 0 - 100 kph
in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 320 kph (200 mph).
All the air scoops where not in the original design, but were added later.
When testing began, Porsche soon discovered that they were needed to supply enough air
for the turbo chargers and to keep the engine running cool enough.
The Porsche 959 was never certified legal for American roads since Porsche
refused to hand over 4 cars for crash testing. Who can blame them?
