I had known about Porsches for some time. But, back in 1969, I had a VW Karmann Ghia cabriolet. I'd always loved roadsters and I really enjoyed driving this one.

One day, I had the KG in for an oil change. While waiting, I looked around the dealer's showroom. Right there, they had a fabulous looking silver Porsche Targa. From that day on, I wanted a silver Porsche Targa. Every time I was lucky enough to be stopped beside a Porsche at a traffic light, I always hoped the driver was in a hurry. I wanted to hear that flat six pull away from the light. What an intoxicating sound.

For years, I saved and wanted one of these beautiful cars, but was just not able to afford one.

Then, along came the Detroit Auto Show in 1993. Porsche introduced the Boxster concept car. When I first laid eyes on it, my jaw just dropped. WOW! Porsche actually designed a car more beautiful than that silver Porsche Targa. This became the new car of my dreams. For one reason or another, I still wasn't able to afford one of these gorgeous cars.

My 2006 Boxster 987

It wasn't until 2006 that I was able to finally afford one. I ended up getting a 2006 Boxster in Arctic Silver and manual transmission. The Boxster always exceeded my expectations. Every time I twisted that key with my left hand and fired up that fabulous flat six, I had that tingle up my spine, in anticipation of another drive. I ended up driving it far more than I had expected. I found it to not only be a fabulous driver's car, but also a great car for road trips, with yearly trips to BRBS in North Carolina and a trip out to California.

My 2014 Boxster 981S

By 2013, it was becoming pretty clear that most car manufacturers were going totally automatic with their transmissions. Most of the expensive sports car manufacturers like Ferrari, Maclaren and Lamborghini no longer offer a manual transmission. Even cars like the Porsche Turbo and GT3 no longer are available with a manual transmission. To me, shifting gears is an integral part of both driving skill and enjoyment of driving.

Then more rumours emerged. The Boxster's fabulous flat six might be replaced by a turbo charged four cylinder. So, concerned that I might soon not be able to buy a Boxster with a manual transmission or the flat six, I decided to custom order a new Boxster 981 S. After close to a year of checking things out on the Porsche configurator and trying different options on test drives, I took the plunge and ordered, what for me, is the ultimate Boxster S.

The Boxster being such a drivers car, I avoided spending money on things like infotainment systems. Instead, I focused on adding options that enhanced the Boxster's best features - handling and the sound of the fabulous flat six engine that produces what I call the Symphony in Flat Six.
